Rudraksha Types Explained: 1 Mukhi to 14 Mukhi and Gauri Shankar (Complete Guide)

Quick answer: A Rudraksha is the dried seed of the Elaeocarpus ganitrus tree. Its "mukhi" (face) count is the number of natural lines running from top to bottom. Each mukhi is traditionally linked to a deity and a planet: 5 Mukhi (Jupiter) is the everyday bead anyone can wear, 7 Mukhi is worn for Lakshmi and Saturn, and 11, 12, 13 Mukhi and Gauri Shankar are rarer beads usually chosen with an astrologer's guidance.

This guide is written by the team at Shreerudra, a pooja store in Roop Nagar, Delhi that has been dealing in Rudraksha and gemstones since 2000. Every higher mukhi bead we sell comes with a lab and X-ray certificate.

What does "Mukhi" mean in Rudraksha?

Mukhi means face. Look closely at a Rudraksha bead and you will see deep grooves running from the top to the bottom. Count them and you have the mukhi. A bead with five lines is a 5 Mukhi (Panchmukhi) Rudraksha. Lower mukhis (2 to 7) are common; beads above 10 Mukhi, and a true 1 Mukhi, are rare and therefore costly.

The beads, one by one

1 Mukhi Rudraksha (Ek Mukhi)

The 1 Mukhi represents Lord Shiva himself. The round Nepali 1 Mukhi is extremely rare, so most genuine 1 Mukhi beads sold today are the half-moon "kaju dana" shape from South India and Indonesia. See our Ek Mukhi Rudraksha locket (kaju dana) with lab certificate.

4, 5 and 6 Mukhi Rudraksha

These are the most worn beads. The 5 Mukhi suits almost everyone and is the bead used in most japa malas. The 4 Mukhi is popular with students and the 6 Mukhi with people in creative or public-facing work. All three are available as silver-capped pendants: 4 Mukhi pendant, 5 Mukhi pendant and 6 Mukhi pendant in 925 sterling silver.

7 Mukhi Rudraksha

Linked to Mahalakshmi and Saturn, the 7 Mukhi is worn by people who want financial stability or who are going through Sade Sati. Shop the original Nepali 7 Mukhi Rudraksha.

8 and 9 Mukhi Rudraksha

The 8 Mukhi (Ganesha, Rahu) is chosen to remove obstacles; the 9 Mukhi (Durga, Ketu) for courage and energy. Both come with lab and X-ray certificates: 8 Mukhi and 9 Mukhi.

10, 11 and 12 Mukhi Rudraksha

The 10 Mukhi is a protective bead linked to Lord Vishnu. The 11 Mukhi is associated with Hanuman and is worn for courage. The 12 Mukhi carries the energy of Surya and is popular with business owners and people in leadership roles. View the 10 Mukhi, 11 Mukhi and 12 Mukhi.

13 Mukhi Rudraksha

A rare Nepali bead traditionally linked with Indra and Kamdev, worn for charm and the fulfilment of wishes. Ours is the original Nepali 13 Mukhi with lab and X-ray certificate.

Gauri Shankar Rudraksha

Two beads naturally joined together, symbolising Shiva and Parvati. It is kept in the pooja room or worn for harmony in marriage and family. See the Nepali Gauri Shankar Rudraksha with lab and X-ray certificate and the larger 35–37 mm Gauri Shankar bead.

Nepali vs Indonesian Rudraksha

Nepali beads are larger, with deep, clearly defined mukhi lines, and are generally considered more potent and are priced higher. Indonesian (Java) beads are smaller and smoother and are commonly used in malas. Both are genuine Rudraksha; the difference is size, texture and price.

How to choose the right Rudraksha

  1. If you are new to Rudraksha, start with a 5 Mukhi. It is safe for everyone, including children and women.

  2. For a specific goal (career, marriage, planetary dosha), choose by the chart above or consult an astrologer with your birth chart.

  3. For any bead above 7 Mukhi, insist on a lab certificate and X-ray report. Fakes are common at this price level.

  4. Wear it on a Monday morning after bathing, ideally after chanting "Om Namah Shivaya" 108 times.

How to wear and care for Rudraksha

  • Wear it on a red or yellow thread, or capped in silver or gold.

  • Remove it before sleeping, bathing with soap, or attending a funeral, if you follow traditional rules.

  • Clean it occasionally with a soft brush and apply a drop of sandalwood or mustard oil once a month so it does not dry out.

  • Store it in a clean cloth or your pooja place when not wearing it.
