Rudraksha Mala, Bracelet or Pendant? How to Choose and Wear Rudraksha Jewellery
Quick answer: For chanting (japa) choose a 108+1 bead 5 Mukhi Rudraksha mala. For everyday wear around the neck, a single bead pendant is the simplest option. If you prefer something on the wrist, a Rudraksha bracelet or kada works well. Smaller beads (5–6 mm) are lighter and better for japa; larger beads (10 mm) are bolder for wearing.
This guide is from Shreerudra, a Delhi pooja store that has sold Rudraksha and malas since 2000.
Mala, bracelet or pendant: which one?
Type | Best for | Things to know |
Mala (108+1 beads) | Japa, meditation, wearing on special days | The extra "Sumeru" bead marks the start and end of a round |
Pendant (single bead) | Daily wear, specific mukhi benefits | Usually capped in silver; easy to wear under clothes |
Bracelet / kada | Daily wear for people who do not like neck jewellery | Adjustable thread or metal kada |
Kawach locket with Rudraksha | Protection and specific deities | Combines a yantra locket with Rudraksha beads |
Rudraksha malas
The 5 Mukhi (Panchmukhi) mala is the classic choice. It is used for chanting "Om Namah Shivaya" and other mantras and can be worn by anyone.
5 Mukhi Rudraksha mala, 5 mm: light and comfortable for long japa sessions.
5 Mukhi Rudraksha mala, 6 mm: our most popular all-round japa mala.
5 Mukhi Rudraksha mala, 10 mm Nepali beads: bigger beads with deeper lines, often worn rather than used for japa.
Panchmukhi Rudraksha and white sandalwood mala: combines the calming fragrance of sandalwood with Rudraksha.
Natural Moti (pearl) Rudraksha mala: pearls are linked with the Moon in Jyotish.
Rahu Ketu mala and Narmund Rudraksh mala: used in specific sadhanas and remedies.
Choosing the bead size
5 mm: lightest, ideal for counting thousands of mantras.
6–7 mm: balanced size for both japa and wearing.
10 mm and above: bold look; mostly worn rather than counted.
Rudraksha pendants
A single bead pendant lets you wear a specific mukhi. Popular choices are the 5 Mukhi pendant, 4 Mukhi pendant, 6 Mukhi pendant in sterling silver and the Ek Mukhi kaju dana locket. For devotional designs, see the Om Damru Rudraksh locket and the Shiv Shakti kavach pendant with 5 Mukhi Rudraksha.

How to energise and wear a Rudraksha mala
Wash the mala in clean water (or Gangajal) and let it dry.
Apply a little sandalwood paste or oil.
Offer it to Lord Shiva and chant "Om Namah Shivaya" 108 times.
Wear it or begin your japa, ideally on a Monday morning.
Using a mala for japa
Hold the mala in your right hand, draping it over the middle finger. Use the thumb to move one bead at a time towards you. Do not cross the Sumeru bead; turn the mala around and start the next round. Keep your mala in a cotton gomukhi japa bag so it stays clean.
Caring for Rudraksha jewellery
Avoid soap, perfume and chemicals on the beads.
Oil the beads lightly once a month to stop them drying and cracking.
Re-string the mala when the thread starts to wear.
Frequently asked questions
How many beads should a Rudraksha mala have?
A japa mala has 108 beads plus one Sumeru (guru) bead. Smaller wrist malas have 27 or 54 beads.
Can I sleep with a Rudraksha mala on?
Many people remove it before sleeping to protect the beads and thread. It is a matter of personal and family practice.
Which is better, a Rudraksha pendant or a mala?
A pendant lets you wear one specific mukhi every day. A mala is better for chanting. Many people own both.
